Superintendent's Corner: Spring 2025

Superintendent's Corner

Spring 2025

I hope this message finds you well and filled with the excitement of the spring season. I am thrilled to share some wonderful updates and achievements within our school district.

Six years ago, in partnership with the Indian Valley Education Foundation (IVEF), we dedicated the Greenhouse at Souderton Area High School to the theme “Growth Happens Here,” and I am delighted to report that this theme continues to flourish throughout our District. The Board of School Directors has approved substantial renovations to West Broad Street Elementary School, Salford Hills Elementary School, and Indian Crest Middle School. These renovations will create safe, functional, and flexible spaces that will nurture our students' growth and learning for years to come. Additionally, our high school campus will soon boast a new multipurpose turf field, providing our student-athletes with a reliable and top-notch practice and play area.

Throughout the District, exciting things are occurring in all of our schools.

  • E.M.C. Elementary School is excited to announce the creation of a vibrant garden space for outdoor learning. Thanks to the generous support of IVEF, Souderton Mayor Dan Yocum, and local businesses, our garden is blossoming into a wonderful educational resource. This spring, we eagerly anticipate adding more to our garden. Last fall, our fourth graders delved into their science unit on seeds and plants. They learned about various flower bulbs, including the best times and methods for planting them. Each student had the opportunity to plant a bulb in our new garden, and they are now eagerly awaiting the first signs of spring when the new shoots will emerge from the soil. These fourth graders will be the first to leave a lasting, beautiful contribution to our E.M.C. garden.

  • Franconia Elementary School students possess a strong desire to help families and give back to their community. Student council representative Nick Valentin shared, “One of our goals in student council is to give back to the community. We want to help families in our area that are in need.” The student council took the initiative to spearhead a sock collection for a local homeless shelter. Many homeless individuals walk several miles a day, causing their socks to become worn and dirty. Socks are the number one need in many shelters. Our student council highlighted this need to our students, and Franconia truly rose to the challenge. Our students collected an impressive 625 pairs of socks.

  • Oak Ridge Elementary introduced "Flight Time" in grades 2nd through 5th where students can receive support or enrichment within the classroom with their teacher or dive into engaging activities outside the classroom. This special period also empowers students to explore their own interests through Passion Projects. These student-driven projects are incredibly diverse, ranging from creating captivating slideshows about their favorite musicians to designing imaginative paper golf course games. We are absolutely thrilled to witness how this time is sparking student growth and engagement!

  • Salford Hills Elementary School has introduced the Blue Crew Award to celebrate students who go above and beyond or consistently demonstrate hard work. So far this year, we have proudly given away over 170 Blue Crew Awards! These students receive a Blue Crew Award Certificate, a Blue Crew Swag Tag, and are recognized in our monthly school meetings. We are excited to continue recognizing and celebrating our outstanding students in the coming months.

  • Students at Vernfield Elementary are in for a treat with a fantastic new activity to enjoy during recess! Big Blue Blocks will soon be available for outdoor play, offering an innovative system that encourages teamwork and creativity. With these oversized foam-based blocks and parts, children can construct amazing creations together. Cooperative play is crucial for a child's development, as it teaches them to learn and grow alongside their peers. Playtime inspires children to expand their creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills, all while collaborating with others. Thanks to the generous support of the Vernfield Elementary Home and School Association and the Indian Valley Education Foundation, our students will have even more opportunities to play, create, and imagine during recess!

  • West Broad Street Elementary School recently hosted an exhilarating Bingo For Books event to ignite a passion for literacy within our community. The event drew enthusiastic participation from over 50 families, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Students eagerly engaged in sight word bingo, competing with excitement for the chance to win brand new books to take home. Parents teamed up with their children, using foundational skills to sound out sight words and cheer each other on. The event was a tremendous success, with families enjoying quality time together while boosting their literacy skills. It was a night filled with fun, learning, and unforgettable memories!

  • At Indian Crest Middle School, our positive behavior support intervention program has been a game changer in fostering a supportive and inclusive school environment. This program, based on our core values of being Considerate, Accepting, Respectful, and Engaged (Crest Kids CARE), has significantly reduced behavioral issues and boosted student engagement. The focus on positive reinforcement, clear expectations, and consistent consequences has created a stronger sense of community and a more positive school culture.

  • Earlier this school year, the Indian Valley Middle School S.A.V.E. Club hosted their highly anticipated annual Science Night, a free event that brought families together for an evening of scientific exploration. Over 70 enthusiastic students from grades 6-8 led a variety of engaging science activities and experiments for more than 200 elementary students. The event was a resounding success, captivating young minds with hands-on science concepts and sparking a passion for scientific discovery.

  • Through the support of the Indian Valley Education Foundation, Souderton Mennonite Home residents and our High School Introduction to Literature students are participating in the first ever "Wonder & Wisdom" Project. This innovative initiative pairs students with residents to discuss themes and real-world connections in Elie Wiesel's book Night. Through these enriching conversations, we aim to build bridges between generations and cultures, creating meaningful connections and broadening perspectives.

Our Administration and Board of School Directors are diligently working through the budget season and have established their commitment to not raising taxes above the Act 1 Index of 4.0%.

The arrival of March begins Youth Art Month, offering a multitude of exciting creative opportunities for our students. This vibrant month features school musicals, concerts, and more, showcasing the incredible talents of our young artists. If you are a senior citizen, and don't yet have a Gold Card, now is the perfect time to get one and immerse yourself in the artistic creations of our students.

Our Community Education Department has expanded its spring class offerings, including new aquatics and fitness courses. Looking ahead, registration is now open for the Souderton Summer Camps for grades K-6. These camps offer a fantastic array of activities designed to keep young minds engaged and active throughout the summer. Additionally, the high school will feature a full schedule of sports camps, providing students with the opportunity to hone their athletic skills and enjoy the camaraderie of team sports.

The Indian Valley Education Foundation (IVEF) continues to live its mission of enriching and expanding the educational experiences of every child in the Souderton Area School District, providing over $100,000 in funding support for educational opportunities and experiences this school year alone. IVEF is excited to announce the return of the Harlem Wizards on Friday, April 4th, and hopes to host a sold-out crowd again! Proceeds from this event and the annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing on June 16th will fund educational opportunities and resources for SASD students. IVEF hopes to welcome you at one of their upcoming events. Follow IVEF on social media or visit their Web site for more information!

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our school district. Together, we’re building a lively and supportive community where everyone can truly grow.

Sincerely,

Frank T. Gallagher, Ed.D.
