Computer Science

Computer science is defined as “the study of computers and algorithmic processes, including their principles, their hardware and software designs, their [implementation], and their impact on society.”

Computer science builds on computer literacy, educational technology, digital citizenship, and information technology.  Instructionally support is provided to help students begin to look at coding and programming and technology as they do when they use legos or cardboard to build creations. Through using a variety of hands-on resources to digital resources students are able to understand the difference between knowing how to use something and beginning to understand how it works. The study of computer science helps students explore how they can solve complex problems by creating systems and programs and building the device and creating the code to change the world.

The student work accomplished during Computer Science instruction is based on a curriculum that is aligned with district, state and national standards. The concepts and skills found in the curriculum are based on the standards of both the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Pennsylvania Standards Aligned System (SAS).

These standards are not an end in themselves but our whole program is designed to help students achieve the technology standards in the context of their math, science, social studies, language arts, and other subject area standards.

Below is an overview of technology skills and learning by grade.

Internet Safety is another very important focus of instruction taught not only by the computer teacher, but also reinforced by the classroom teacher. Students use the filtered Internet according to the district's acceptable use policy to research classroom topics, navigate clip art galleries and read current events. Our young researchers are taught to cite electronic sources used during research. These experiences are used to help them understand their role as a digital citizen in the 21st century.

Children in Souderton Area School District have access to computers in their classrooms, a mobile laptop lab and a computer lab in every elementary school. In addition to the lessons that the students receive in the computer lab with their technology teacher, classroom teachers and the district Instructional Technology Support staff work with children to facilitate the ubiquitous use of technology in their curriculum areas.
